It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Edward Thawenrate Diabo. Eddie died peacefully on October 8, 2023 at the Kateri Memorial Hospital Center in the Long-Term care Unit.
Born in Kahnawà:ke on March 3, 1929, to Louise Deer and Moses Diabo, his is predeceased by his sister Grace (late Allen Gorrow), and his brothers Duke (late Monica Oneill), Clifford and his wife Margaret Phillips.
He leaves behind his brother Johnny, and sister Debby (late Jerry Delisle), as well as Annie (Leroy Lazare) who he treated as his own daughter. He will be dearly missed by his niece Glenda (Arbor Al Diabo) and many nieces and nephews who live close and abroad.
In Eddie’s younger years he would be seen riding, effortlessly, one of his many bicycles around town. He was a reserved man who was always speaking Kanien’kaha. He also made sure that you heard and understood what he was saying, in order to pass on the language.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of the KMHC Long-term Unit who assisted in helping him live his remaining years with dignity and respect. Eddie also had a special connection with Sonia, Gigi and Donnabell. His family would like to say thank you to all his caregivers.
The family is receiving relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 12th. Funeral Services on Thursday, October 12th at 2:00 p.m. . in the parlor. Burial to follow at 207 Longhouse.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Iakwahwatsiratatie the Language Nest or Karihwanoron Mohawk Immersion Kahnawake in his memory of keeping Kanien’kaha alive.
