Robert and Naida wintered almost 40 years in south Florida. When I came along in 2000 and married Robert’s brother Ian, I got to winter in Florida, too. They were the best of neighbours and we saw each other every day, given that I was right next door! I have many, many stories to tell, most of them funny. Life was never in the fast lane for Robert. He was always calm. Always ready to settle in and tell long stories. Naida would roll her eyes. I miss her so much. He liked to ride his adult tricycle around the neighbourhood collecting items left for the trash collectors and accumulated a mountain of useless junk in his garage. He also picked up empty pop cans. One day he came over and showed me $735 in cash. He was so happy. He had gone to the scrap yard with a rusty barrel of hand squashed pop cans he picked up here and there. So I asked him the same question you would ask. How many years did it take you to collect all that? “Oh, about 40 years.” And we laughed.
