Surrounded by his loving family, Winston passed away after a short battler of cancer on May 29th, 2025, at the age of 81, just 3 days short of his 82nd birthday, at Kateri hospital.
Winston was predeceased by his beloved mother, Edna Hemlock and his father Michael ‘’Mike’’ Standup and a month ago on April 25th, his beloved nephew Christian Dibernardo.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Mayo, his sons, Mike, Jeffrey, Joe and his daughter Tekaronhiahkhwa (Greg), his grandchildren Tehowero:ron (Kyndra) and Ienen’taha:wi, his sister Noella (Joe), his niece Cara (Ryan) and Mark, his beloved nephews Johnathan, James and Matthew, his step-grandchildren Kaniataroton (Cheyenne), Onerahtokon (Iohserenhawi), his step-greatgrandchildren Tehaianerahkwa, Iakohahiio, Tiewennaienas and Ratewennatohka, also survived by Geraldine Standup the mother of his children, his sisters-in-law Crystal, Wendy, Mary Beth (Sny), Kim and Kelly (Joe), his aunties Louise Hemlock and Josie Hemlock, many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, co-workers of the MCK water and sewer services and his golfing buddies.
Winston was well known for his sports, baseball, hockey and golf as a young boy and a teenager he built his own 9 hole par 3 in his backyard. He was a stickler for the rule book in every sport he loved. He also knew every baseball player from the beginning, every hockey player from the original 6, and golfers right from the Bobby Jones to his hero Tiger Woods.
He was also an umpire for baseball for years, well known infamous referee for the Saturday hockey league (the Hackers), if you were a player on the ice and seen his finger pointed at you and his arms crossed you were in big trouble.
We thank the following, the Kahnawake Fire Brigade, the Anna-Laberge hospital, CHUM, Kateri hospital short term care, PAB’S, nurses and doctors who went over and above to help Winston and to help us to take care of our needs as well.
His viewing will be at Poissant & Deer Kahnawake, starting Tuesday June 3rd, at 11 am, funeral Thursday June 5th, at 2 pm at St-Francis-Xavier Church, burial at the catholic cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Tetewatatia’takehnhahs (the purple ribbon) or Iakwahwatsiratatie (the language nest).
Winston was also an avid bingo player, from his days in Brooklyn to New Hampshire. He knew every bingo hall, K1037, Mohawk Super Bingo, the Elder’s Lodge and the Kahnawake Golden Age.
Winston made friends everywhere he went, and will be remembered by everyone, he was a comedian, a jokester and the greatest storyteller of our history, culture and traditions. He shared his stories with everyone, the Eastern Door, Iori:wase, and he did the research by himself.
