Samuel Phillip Denis Sakokeniatha
KIRBY
Passed away at the age of 80 years old at his home in Kahnawake.
He is predeceased by his parents Joe & Ceceilia Kirby, and brothers: Frank, Herbie, Ronnie and Norman.
He is survived by his wife 58 years Cynthia Kirby and sons Sam Jr., Dwayne (Melanie), grandson Cole Whenisera:se (Savanna), family-in-law Arlene Jacobs who was a regular part our family gatherings, travels, and feasts.
Survived by his siblings: Barbara (Harvey Hartwell), Jackie (late Vern Huff), Freddy (Debbie Drouin), Danny (late Arlene Phillips), Carole (late Thomas Kennedy), Darlene (late Bob Janetschek) and Lorna.
Survived by his Williams family in-laws: Palma (late Louie Jacco), Franklyn (Bonnie Jacobs), Louis, Charlene (Randolph Loft) and Darryl. And survived by hundreds in the Kirby family, including many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dad started out his work life a Union iron worker first in Local 361 (Brooklyn), Local 7 (Boston), then finally Local 711 (Montreal) from the 1950’s through the early 1970’s. He shelved his Union book in the 1970’s to come home and raise his family.
Beginning in the 1970’s he wore many hats in the community as a school bus driver, a volunteer firefighter & EMT for the Kahnawake Fire Brigade (rose to assistant fire chief), then in the 1980’s for then Social Services (KSCS), and the remainder of his career as school bus driver from 1987-2014 his retirement.
In 1982, he was appointed to the position of Justice of the Peace for the Court of Kahnawake until his retirement in 2006. Then again, in 2019 he answered the call of duty to Kahnawake and became reinstated as Justice of the Peace to which he served until his last day with us.
He lived a long and colorful life as a family man. He was a loyal member of the Chateauguay congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses for over 50 years. Dad loved golf and had many close friends at the local Golf Clubs. He enjoyed many rounds with his long-time friend Elmer Jacobs in the good old days.
Sam also enjoyed the outdoors, going to restaurants and travelling to the US to check his mail on a weekly basis.
The Kirby’s want to acknowledge and send out our sincerest and heartfelt thanks to the members of the Kahnawá:ke Fire Brigade and the Kahnawá:ke Peacekeepers.
Per his wishes, Sam will be cremated with a family gathering to be held at a later date.
